Fox Road Energy Club

amy Amy Constant, Advisor

Thirty-six students were chosen for the Energy Club out of over 50 applicants - from all 5th grade classrooms.

Fox Road students enjoy working with the National Energy Education Development project, NEED (www.need.org), science materials, and working with Ms. Larkins and Ms. Hauptmann from the Wake County Energy Savers Department to learn about energy and things they can do to save energy. This year we are hoping to help with PowerDude and to help teach TEACHERS about energy.

Our first big project has been learning about CFL's, energy efficient light bulbs. Although Compact Fluorescent bulbs are more expensive to buy, they end up saving money since they use so much less electricity. We are trying to get 500 people to agree to change from an old incandescent bulb to a new flourescent bulb.

Tips when buying "curly" bulbs:
* "Lumens" measure light, "watts" measure electricity.
CFL's only need 1/4 the watts of a normal bulb,
but have the same number of lumens.

* Always buy "Energy Star" rated bulbs in order to be
guaranteed a good product.

Fox Road students have been competing against schools across the US for awards the last 6 years.  We have won state, national and local prizes.  To receive our prize, each summer some of the Energy Club students travel to Washington DC.  This is 4 fun-filled days where we get to play tourist, meet kids from around the country and learn more about energy!
